More about Personal Shredder
Frequently Asked Questions — Personal Shredder Malaysia
What is a personal shredder and who is it suitable for?
A personal shredder is a compact, entry-level machine designed for a single user who shreds documents occasionally rather than continuously throughout the day. It is ideal for home use, a private home office workstation, or a freelancer who needs to destroy bank statements, IC copies, medical documents, utility bills, and personal letters. Personal shredders are not designed for shared office use or high-volume daily shredding — for that, a small office or medium duty model would be more appropriate.
What is the difference between a personal shredder and a small office shredder?
Personal shredders are smaller, lighter, and built for occasional single-user shredding. They typically handle 5–8 sheets per pass, have a bin capacity of 10–20 litres, and require a cool-down rest after 2–5 minutes of continuous use. Small office shredders handle more sheets per pass, have a larger bin, and can run for longer before needing a rest. If you shred just a few documents a day at home, a personal shredder is sufficient and much more affordable. If you shred regularly at a desk in a working office, step up to a small office model.
Which cut type should I choose for a personal shredder?
Straight cut produces long strips and is the most affordable option, suitable only for non-sensitive general waste. Cross cut shreds paper into small rectangular pieces at DIN P-3 or P-4 security — appropriate for personal documents such as bank statements, utility bills, and letters containing your name and address. Micro cut produces tiny particles at DIN P-5 and is the safest choice for highly sensitive documents such as IC copies, tax documents, and medical records. For most home users in Malaysia, a cross cut personal shredder at DIN P-4 offers the best balance of security and value.
How many sheets can a personal shredder handle per pass?
Most personal shredders handle between 5 and 8 sheets of standard 70–80 gsm paper per pass. This is sufficient for shredding a few documents at a time, which is the typical use case at home. Avoid overloading the feed slot beyond the rated capacity — personal shredder motors are smaller than office models and repeated overloading is the most common cause of early motor failure on entry-level machines.
Do personal shredders need shredder oil?
Yes — all cross cut and micro cut shredders, including personal models, benefit from regular oiling to keep the cutting blades running smoothly and prevent overheating. For a personal shredder used a few times a week, oiling once a month is generally sufficient. Apply a few drops of shredder oil across the width of the feed slot, then run the shredder in reverse for a few seconds to distribute it. Never use WD-40 or general-purpose lubricants — shredder oil only. Shredder2u stocks shredder oil that is compatible with all brands we carry.
Can a personal shredder handle credit cards and CDs?
Some personal shredder models include a dedicated slot for credit cards and optical discs. This feature varies by model — check the product specifications before attempting to shred anything other than paper. Feeding a credit card into a feed slot not rated for it can damage or jam the cutting blades. If shredding cards and CDs is important to you, filter by models that explicitly list these media in their supported materials.
Which brands of personal shredders does Shredder2u carry?
Shredder2u carries personal shredders from GBC, Fellowes, Primus, and Dino — all authorised brands with local warranty support. GBC and Fellowes are well known for consistent build quality and reliable safety features such as auto-reverse on jam. Primus offers a good range of affordable cross cut and micro cut models at entry-level prices, while Dino's Super Star micro cut model is a popular choice for home users who want higher security at a compact size.
